Course dates:

What we will cover

This course builds capability for Teacher Aides to work with students in guided or instructional settings. It supports teacher aides to understand reading and writing processes and provides knowledge and strategies to enable them to interact with students in a way that maximises learning.

You will develop skills to design learning experiences for students which are relevant to their context in literacy. Sessions will respond to individual needs and address personal challenges faced in the role of supporting students struggling with reading and writing. You will also consider Māori perspectives of ākonga, allowing for iwi and whānau views to influence how educational success is defined.  

This course builds your capability in the following Teacher Aide Competency areas:

  • Communication: Understand and support language development
  • Learning support: Knowledge and proficiency of specific programmes and/or curriculum areas to support learners EG literacy and numeracy
