Understanding the Impact of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Language Education Settings Workshops

Paula Kasper
March 14, 2022

Tui Tuia | Learning Circle - Languages are so fortunate to be in partnership with Groundwork: Facilitating Change. We have just presented in February our first 2022 EXPLORE workshop on Understanding the Impact of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay. This popular event was attended by a range of ECE, Primary, Intermediate and High School teachers who were pleased to have gained a deeper understanding and further insight into all areas surrounding this important document.

This workshop provided participants with an understanding of why we have a Treaty, what it says, colonisation and its impacts, and current Treaty issues. Delivered by the culturally sensitive but culturally responsive Gwyn John, our workshop enabled participants to consider personal responses and actions as a classroom teacher. Delving into the meaning behind events, collaborating to empathise different viewpoints, and recognising the importance of Language and Culture. This extended the participants' understanding which they can take back to their students and classrooms to be adapted for our educational settings.  By discussing and reflecting on the shared information, that is student centred, it creates a pathway to a bi-cultural learning environment for students in Aotearoa.

An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty) is critical to working effectively within the education setting and classrooms in Aotearoa. Gaining an appreciation of the context, intentions and on-going significance of the Treaty enables teachers to recognise its applicability to their lives and work and of those of their students.

Coming up in Term 1 and Term 2:

Dunedin - Friday 20th May

Auckland - Friday 3rd June

Future dates for Term 3 and Term 4 at other national locations to be added for the second half of 2022.

A highly recommended Professional Learning Development event – sign up now
