Giftedness from Pacific perspectives is a collection of five videos where Pacific experts talanoa in their own language about their understanding of what it means to be gifted. Learn more about what that looks like from a Tongan, Cook Islands Māori, Samoan, and Tokelauan perspective across the four videos.  Each of the videos also comes with written summaries, which highlight the key points of the videos and provide different ways you can engage with Pacific children and their families appropriately. They’re designed to help you create a supportive environment that nurtures the talents and abilities of gifted Pacific children in your setting. These resources introduce early learning kaiako to Pacific perspectives on the concept of 'giftedness'. They support kaiako to engage with a suite of four videos on giftedness in Lea Faka-Tonga (Tongan), Gagana Sāmoa (Samoan), Te Reo Māori Kūki ‘Airani (Cook Islands Māori) and Gagana Tokelau (Tokelauan).

Giftedness from Pacific perspectives

Associate Professor Jacoba Matapo (Auckland University of Technology) introduces the four videos that explore giftedness from Pacific perspectives.

This resource explores giftedness in children under 5 years of age across four Pacific perspectives - Samoa, Cook Islands, Tokelau and Tonga.

Giftedness from a Samoan perspective

  • From a Samoan perspective, when you think about giftedness, what Samoan words/concepts come to mind?
  • When you think about young children, how do you see those concepts be lived/reflected/played out?

It provides practical strategies for kaiako to promote cultural knowledge, language, and spirituality.
