Haere Mai Fiona Yen, Facilitor - Tui Tuia | Learning Circle

March 21, 2022

Da jia hao!! My name is Fiona Yen, and I am the new facilitator for Chinese language at Tui Tuia ǀ Learning Circle. I am an experienced teacher with a passion for languages. I have been teaching for over 15 years and I have always loved finding creative and engaging ways to share the joy of language learning with my students. I would like to use this opportunity to introduce myself to you all and take this opportunity to express how excited I am to be part of the team.

I graduated from the University of Canterbury majoring in Chinese and Russian, then I continued with a Post-Graduate Teaching and Learning Diploma. I am fully trained under the new NCEA framework and up to date with the New Curriculum.

I strive to establish good relationships with all my students. I find understanding their strengths and weakness helps guide my teaching and gives them the best opportunity to succeed in learning Chinese. I have taken students to China several times, the trip helped students build more confidence to use their new learnt language. One of the highlights of my career was working for the University of Canterbury lecturing Level One Chinese and directing a Chinese-language summer program.

Throughout my teaching career, I have worked to develop close relationships with other Chinese language teachers in my region and am actively involved with the Canterbury Chinese teacher association. Every year, I work with this association to help organise a ‘Chinese language event’ day; to promote the Chinese language in the Canterbury region

Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, watching soccer games, and my newfound love of Pilates.  My passion for cooking was inspired by my husband. He is from Spain, we married in 2016, and have been travelling together to different countries during our honeymoon. We both love sharing our cultures through food.

I am comfortable working with people from all walks of life and from many different cultures. I enjoy being able to bridge different cultures and help people come together to understand each other.

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to utilise my skills and to further develop my knowledge in Tui Tuia ǀ Learning Circle. I would like to contribute towards raising the profile and understanding of both the Chinese language and culture in New Zealand.
