I was a Visual Art trained teacher then developed professionally to be a language teacher. My journey of language teaching started when I was working with a group of lovely teachers who are passionate about promoting Chinese language and culture. I was volunteering for the Chinese Language Foundation (CLF) with students’ immersion camps. From then onwards, I completed my teacher training. I developed a strong belief that teaching and learning a language will enable us to see the world from a wider perspective and respect the difference of other individuals.
However, my journey of becoming the teacher I am now wasn’t easy as I had a “traditional teacher centred” learning and teaching style ingrained in my first couple years of teaching. I found it hard to be a teacher in a New Zealand school. Over time, my teaching pedagogy changed as I participated in more professional learning programmes and collaborated with colleagues. All the learning has opened my eyes to re-examine my own learning journey and put myself in students’ perspective. It allowed me to reflect on my own practice and be more creative as a teacher. I love seeing my students being successful with their learning. Most importantly, students enjoyed the process of learning when they acquired new skills. It motivated me to continuously think creatively in my course design and became less “traditional” in my teaching approach.
In my short 10 years of teaching Chinese language, I have started up and designed Chinese language programme at Auckland Girl’s Grammar. I also have created my own Chinese language teaching resources. I am experienced in digital learning and teaching. I enjoy sharing and exchanging practical knowledge and experiences with teachers to further develop my own language teaching pedagogy to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. I was lucky to be given the opportunity to be part of the professional teaching and learning coaching team at Pakuranga College. My role was to assist and support other teachers to inspire reflection, new ideas and growth. It is this role that lead me onto this new adventure.
I love that there are constant professional learning opportunities at Tui Tuia | Learning Circle. I am very excited to be part of the language team to continue growing with more teachers.
