2025 Korean Speech Competition: School Division

The annual Korean Speech Competition, organised by the Korean Education Centre in New Zealand, provided an exciting opportunity for school learners of Korean to showcase their skills through video submissions.

This year, the theme of the competition was “My Special K-Food Story,” encouraging students to share personal experiences and stories related to Korean food.

Reflecting the growing interest in the Korean language and culture, students from schools across New Zealand participated, showcasing not only their language skills but also their creativity and cultural understanding in their speeches.

You can watch videos of the winning speeches on the Korean Education Centre’s website.

Congratulations to all the winners and participants in the school division!

Planning Ahead: Strengthening or Establishing Your Korean Language Programme in 2026

As the school year comes to a close, it’s an ideal time to reflect on this year’s achievements and plan for 2026. Whether you want to strengthen your existing Korean language programme or introduce a new one, having the right support will help ensure your programme is sustainable, engaging, and future-focused.

Korean language education is growing steadily across Aotearoa, offering ākonga valuable opportunities to engage with both the language and culture. To help schools build strong programmes, the Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) provides a range of support for schools nationwide.

Funding and Grants
Through the Korean Language Class Fund, schools can apply for financial support to introduce new Korean classes or expand existing programmes. The fund has already helped many schools create new learning opportunities. For applications and details, please visit the KEC website.

Teaching Resources
KEC provides free Korean-language textbooks and teaching materials to help schools set up programmes with confidence and support meaningful language learning for ākonga.

Cultural Programmes
To enrich classroom learning, KEC offers in-school cultural workshops during Terms 2-4. Schools interested in providing students with interactive experiences connecting them to Korean culture, including traditional arts, taekwondo, and K-pop dance, are encouraged to contact KEC for more information.

Awards and Events
KEC also motivates students through awards and competitions, such as the Korean Language Achievement Award and the annual speech competition, which recognise student progress and celebrate their achievements in learning Korean in Aotearoa schools. Schools interested in participating are encouraged to contact KEC.

As the school year ends, your mahi has made a real difference in strengthening Korean education across Aotearoa. Connecting with KEC now can help you plan confidently for 2026, ensuring your programme continues to grow, inspire, and engage ākonga.

Ngā mihi nui and best wishes for a successful 2026!
