2023 The 87th TOPIK - Test of Proficiency in Korean (Auckland)

The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is a Korean language test for non-native speakers of Korean. The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is offered six times annually (Jan, Apr, May, Jul, Oct, Nov) within Korea and less often to people studying Korean in other countries.

This year, the 87th Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is scheduled to be held on Saturday 8 April in Auckland. Please click this page for more information.

Please note in advance that the TOPIK test in the second half of 2023 will be held in Christchurch on Saturday 14 October 2023.

Funding and Opportunities for NZ Schools and Teachers

Representing the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea, the Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) supports New Zealand primary, intermediate and secondary schools to establish and run sustainable Korean language programmes.

In 2022, young Kiwis from 47 different schools who have achieved outstanding results from their Korean language learning have been awarded the Korean Language awards at the schools’ prize-giving ceremonies with the support from the Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC).

With the rising popularity of the Korean culture, the number of students learning Korean at their schools continues to increase steadily. Funding and opportunities are available throughout the year as shown below for New Zealand primary, intermediate and secondary schools and teachers either to upskill their Korean language skills or to enrich their Korean language programme(s).

Free Korean Language Classes

The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) offers Korean language classes for beginners through advanced at no cost year around. Classes are available onsite and online. The detailed timetable is available on this page. Please note that Korean calligraphy classes are also available onsite on every Tuesday at no cost.

Korea Festivals in NZ Schools

The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) provides opportunities for schools and students to explore and experience unique culture of Korea. Applications open from late February for schools to apply to have a cultural session(s) such as traditional Korean games, Taekwondo or K-pop dance delivered at their school either in Term 2 or Term 3 by professional instructors from the KEC.

Korean Language Award (Sep)

The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) awards one student from each school who has achieved an outstanding result in their Korean language learning at the end of the school year.

Korean Speech Competition (Oct)

The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) hosts a Korean speech competition annually celebrating the Hanguel Day. Held in Term 3 annually, it serves as a great opportunity for learners not only to show off their Korean language skills but also to get together and connect with other students learning Korean across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Korean Resource Packs (Dec)

The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) donates Korean books and resources to selected schools to enrich teaching and learning culture.

Korean Class Fund

The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) in partnership with the North Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (NA CAPE) provides funding support for schools to either establish new or strengthen their existing Korean language programme(s). Applications open in November and close in early December every year. Korean language programmes at thirty-three NZ schools are funded by the KEC in 2023.

For more information on these funding and opportunities, please contact the Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC).

Global LYNCs
Linking Youth through Net Communications
Online Cultural Exchange Opportunity
New Zealand – Korea

Professor Keong Ku (Keimyung University) invites New Zealand schools to participate in her cultural exchange project, Global LYNCs (Linking Youth through Net Communications), in 2023.

After the successful introduction in Australia in 2015, the project has also been introduced in New Zealand in 2018. The project has been successfully offering authentic learning opportunities through communication between sister schools in New Zealand and Korea through regular video conference sessions for the past five years.

This project involves:

  • Matching your class with a class at a partner school in Korea
  • Regular ZOOM videoconferencing sessions in English which you are invited to by email
  • Building strong, sustainable partnerships

Students will be able to grow their:

  • Global awareness and competence
  • Intercultural knowledge, skills and understanding
  • ICT skills
  • Communication skills and collaboration skills

Teacher training and support with resources and technology will be provided.

This project is primarily intended for cultural exchange. Any school (primary, intermediate, or secondary) and teacher can participate. However, there is the possibility of adding a language component to the exchange if the students’ Korean language proficiency allows for it.

If you are interested to join or find out more about the project, please contact the Global LYNCs team at globallyncs@gmail.com.
