Representing the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea, the Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) supports New Zealand primary, intermediate and secondary schools to establish and run sustainable Korean language programmes.
In 2022, young Kiwis from 47 different schools who have achieved outstanding results from their Korean language learning have been awarded the Korean Language awards at the schools’ prize-giving ceremonies with the support from the Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC).
With the rising popularity of the Korean culture, the number of students learning Korean at their schools continues to increase steadily. Funding and opportunities are available throughout the year as shown below for New Zealand primary, intermediate and secondary schools and teachers either to upskill their Korean language skills or to enrich their Korean language programme(s).
The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) offers Korean language classes for beginners through advanced at no cost year around. Classes are available onsite and online. The detailed timetable is available on this page. Please note that Korean calligraphy classes are also available onsite on every Tuesday at no cost.
The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) provides opportunities for schools and students to explore and experience unique culture of Korea. Applications open from late February for schools to apply to have a cultural session(s) such as traditional Korean games, Taekwondo or K-pop dance delivered at their school either in Term 2 or Term 3 by professional instructors from the KEC.
The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) awards one student from each school who has achieved an outstanding result in their Korean language learning at the end of the school year.
The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) hosts a Korean speech competition annually celebrating the Hanguel Day. Held in Term 3 annually, it serves as a great opportunity for learners not only to show off their Korean language skills but also to get together and connect with other students learning Korean across Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) donates Korean books and resources to selected schools to enrich teaching and learning culture.
The Korean Education Centre in New Zealand (KEC) in partnership with the North Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (NA CAPE) provides funding support for schools to either establish new or strengthen their existing Korean language programme(s).
