Goethe-Institut German Immersion for teachers and Students 2023:

Lehrer*innenfortbildungen in Deutschland.

You know how sometimes you have these short but sweet experiences where a group of complete strangers come together and within a couple of days are not just colleagues but mates and then family? That seems to be the best way to sum up my recent professional development course, which I was able to attend with the support of Tui Tuia and the Goethe Institute. I spent 2 weeks in Dresden (Germany) with 22 other German teachers from 19 countries around the world, as we refreshed the methodology and pedagogy we use in our classrooms to teach German as a second language. Phonetics, memes, photos, mini research projects, using music and songs to reinforce grammar - we spent our time trying out the activities we can use in the classroom and were reminded that often the simple ideas are best! 2 weeks full immersion German, outings to the theatre, hiking in Swiss Saxony and a lot of beer gardens all enhanced the experience. Very rewarding was the chance to meet colleagues from the worldwide language teaching community and hear about their experiences, cultures and classrooms. Danke vielmals an Tui Tuia und Goethe für diese Gelegenheit und die Unterstützung!

Vicki Cotton, Sacred Heart Girls’ College, Hamilton

Skye, Burnside High School one of our PASCH Scholarship candidates who went to Bremen:

“The time I spent in Bremen will stick with me forever! Not only did I make amazing lifelong friends from around the world, I also learned the most German I ever have there through immersion and fun, engaging lessons. Being there also helped me to become a more confident person - not only in using German but also in everyday life! Ich kann diesen Kurs nicht genug empfehlen!!”

Miyu Okuwaki/ Lynfield College:

Hassini, Burnside High School:

"I will never forget the time I spent in Bremen, Germany. It was the most amazing 3 weeks of my life. I have made friends from all over the world who I still keep in touch with, learnt more German there than I ever have due to the immersion into German culture, and made some unforgettable memories that I will always carry with me.  It is not just about learning the language, but about experiencing German culture through the language, food, and the people we meet, and it has truly been a great experience! This course has also given me the opportunity to take the B1 Goethe exam, and with the German classes and resources provided, I was able to successfully receive the B1 certificate. The classes were really fun and engaging and I always looked forward to them. The activities we did in our free time included sports, exploring the city as well as a range of indoor games. This course helped me become more independent as a person and the lessons I learnt there will be with me lifelong. If this passage hasn’t convinced you to take the course, then I don’t know what will!
Goethe, Goethe, Goethe!! Pasch, Pasch, Pasch!!"
Thank you,

Meanwhile in Auckland.

Königin Fussball. Der Ball ist rund in diesem Term.

Der Ball tours Aotearoa – Der Ball an Wellington Girls‘  College

We had the privilege of hosting “Spirit of Football” at WGC for the day which was an amazing opportunity for students to engage with an international organisation.

We ran workshops in German classes in a mixture of English and German to learn about sustainability and the work SoF is doing to promote gender equality and advocate for the environment. Students were introduced to the UN sustainable development goals and thought about the advocacy and changes they can make in their own lives. We also had the chance to play “fair play” football with a year 12 PE class who loved learning some German and we were joined by German ambassador Nicole Menzenbach.

“Fair play” football encourages inclusivity, positivity and highlights environmental concerns around plastic and the impact it is having on the world. All students got to meet “the Ball” which currently has over 11,000 signatures representing climate and gender equality goals made by people in 20+ countries. We made our own pledges and had WGC heads students and principal make pledges on behalf of the school. Students said it was an incredible experience that allowed them to feel connected to the wider world. They also found it awesome to hear from Andrew Aris who is a Kiwi and the founder of SoF and his experience living and working in Germany.

Aber das war noch nicht alles zum Thema Fussball:

Transnationales Fussballprojekt des GOETHE- INSTITUT Neuseelands:  AuF Ballhöhe. Deutsch Lernen verbindet! Zwei Tage Fussballcamp bei Mana College in Wellington

Wow, what an incredible two days of soccer camp for German learners in Wellington on August 3rd and 4th at MANA College.  On the Ball! As part of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, the Goethe-Institut brought the opportunity of a transnational project to secondary schools in Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia. Students were given the unique opportunity to practice both their language skills and their Doppelpass as well as to compete with schools in other countries. For two days in August 2023, MANA College from Wellington New Zealand experienced a professional German world-class football training without having to leave its school grounds itself. The whole experience was nothing short of amazing. Two professional German soccer coaches were flown into Aotearoa from Germany to deliver this phenomenal camp with the support of the amazing German teacher on site. The coaches displayed incredible knowledge and patience, providing us with valuable soccer skills. The drills and exercises were accompanied by strong bonds formed among fellow German learners who shared the love for the sport. One of the highlights was the visit to a soccer game in Wellington, fulfilling a dream for all participants. Cheering alongside the coaches and newfound friends made the experience even more special. Our hosts were exceptional in their hospitality and warmth, ensuring that every aspect of the adventure was perfect. The combination of soccer, learning German, and forming lasting memories made it an unforgettable journey. Vielen Dank for an extraordinary adventure!
