To celebrate 70 years of diplomatic friendship, German Ambassador Nicole Menzenbach extended a warm invitation to the Embassy Residence. It was an extremely warm, convivial event, where many valuable common memories were shared. In particular, the work around the teaching of the German language was also especially appreciated.
Thank you!
Kia ora,

Seven students of German across Aotearoa were chosen for a fully funded scholarship by the Goethe-Institut to travel to Germany for three weeks. In Bremen they will attend a language course with their other fellow students.
Attaining a high school scholarship is a remarkable accomplishment for any student. It is a testament to their hard work, determination, and academic excellence. But imagine if that scholarship came with the opportunity to study abroad in a country like Germany. Germany is a popular destination for international students seeking higher education. It is renowned for its excellent universities and high-quality education system. This scholarship in Germany from the Goethe-Institut provides a unique opportunity to experience a different culture and way of life. Germany is a diverse and multicultural society with a rich history and many attractions. Students will have the opportunity to learn about German customs and traditions, try new foods, and explore new places. This exposure to a different way of life will broaden their perspectives and make them more well-rounded individuals. The PASCH-scholarship in Germany can be a valuable addition to the students’ resume. Employers value the international experience gained through studying abroad. This experience will demonstrate the student's adaptability, resilience, and independence, qualities that are highly sought after in the global job market.
Philippa Watson, a German teacher from Heretaunga College will accompany the students on their journey. The German ambassador, Head of languages of Goethe-Institut and the German National Language Advisor will farewell the students at Wellington airport on June 24th 2023.
We will report back here about their experiences.
Gute Reise!
“My name is Caitlin McSorley and I am a 15 year old year 11 student at Ashburton College. I am learning German because it can provide many opportunities for me in the future and a few of my family members can also speak the language. I'm feeling really excited and honoured to be doing this as this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am very lucky to be able to go.”

This is great news! The PAD excellence fully funded scholarship for high school students going to Germany for a month is back in place! Congratulations to the two candidates who have been selected for the program 2023!
We are excited to welcome these exceptional students to Germany and to provide them with an unforgettable study abroad experience. We are confident that they will make the most of this opportunity and return home with a deeper understanding of German culture, improved language skills, and lifelong memories.
To those who were not selected, we want to thank you for your interest and encourage you to continue pursuing your academic goals and exploring opportunities to broaden your horizons. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
The scholarship will cover the costs of a one-month study program in Germany, including tuition, housing, and meals. Additionally, the scholarship will provide a stipend for travel and other expenses. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must meet certain academic and language proficiency requirements. Applications were evaluated based on academic achievement, language proficiency, and other criteria.
Our two candidates will stay with host families for two weeks, attend German classes and sit in on other classes at the local high school, as well as being shown around by their host family. At the end of their stay, they will go on a short tour of part of Germany together with other PAD scholarship recipients from around the world. They are delighted to be going to Germany and are looking forward to immersing themselves in the language. Being surrounded by German speakers will force them to speak more, too – something that can only be amazing for their German!
We are pleased to congratulate the two teachers to their great work and achievements.

“Kia ora, my name is Mathias and I come from Denmark, living in New Zealand. I learn German for a variety of reasons, one of them being that both German and my mother tongue Danish descend from the Germanic languages family. Plus I enjoy learning about other cultures and languages, and German is an extremely useful language to know. Not only is it the most spoken language in Europe, but it also helps us understand other languages that have Germanic roots; speaking German opens many opportunities not just throughout the European continent. Brands such as Siemens, Bayer, BMW or Schenker are pretty familiar in New Zealand.
For this travel, I'm most excited about travelling to the various cities and states of Germany, as it’ll be an awesome experience to see German culture and expand my knowledge on the country. This trip will include two weeks of attending German school with a host family who I’ll also be living with, followed by two weeks of travel with other scholarship recipients to cities including Cologne, Munich, and Berlin.”
Priyansh Singh, Schüler von Mount Albert Grammar School, Auckland
“Hello my name is Priyansh and I am a year 12 student at MAGS.
I have been learning German for 3 years because I enjoy it and I think it is a very useful language for me in the future. Regarding this travel, I am most excited about visiting Europe for the first time and travelling alone internationally. I am also looking forward to testing my German skills in public and learning about German culture. I will spend a total of four weeks in Germany, of which two weeks will be spent living with a host family and attending a German school. The other two weeks will be spent visiting the cities of Bonn / Cologne, Berlin and Munich, exploring youth and sporting events, museums, theatre performances, a university and other cultural facilities.”
In 2023, the FIFA Women's World Cup will take place in Australia and New Zealand and the Goethe-Institut will bring students and teachers "on the ball" in a great transnational project.
